Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles Basketball earns road victory at Welch

Gallatin, TN: On Friday, November 2nd, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles ventured to the Volunteer state to face the Welch College Lady Flames. Both squads ladies would give a good effort and come through in the clutch to earn the 83-81 victory.

In the opening period, the hosts rode the hot shooting of Keonna Chumbley to take the early lead. ALC would counter with solid play from freshman guards Bailey Stewart and senior guard Katie Jo Moore. However, due to 53% team shooting, the Flames would lead 22-18 after ten minutes of action.

In the second quarter,  the Lady Eagles would utilize a press to make a run. Sparked by the play of  junior guard Aziah Campbell and freshman guard Elivia Moore, the Pippa Passes posse would use their defense  to take the stanza, 24-16. This would send them into the dressing room at intermission leading 42-38.

In the third period, the Pippa Passes crew saw Stewart score 6 consecutive points to fuel a nice run. WC would fight back with several bombs, but the visitors would take the battle 26-25, and lead 68-63 entering the final quarter of play.

In the final period, Alice Lloyd slowly pulled out to an 11 point lead (81-70), but foul trouble would enable WC to hang around. They would cut the deficit to just a single point (82-81) with 1:20 remaining. Katie Jo Moore would sink a lead free throw to giver her squad a 83-81 advantage. Welch would have the ball under their goal with a chance to win at 3.5 seconds, but the Lady Eagles defense knocked the ball loose to preserve the victory.

For Alice Lloyd (1-2), Stewart was solid as she led all scorers with 21 points, sinking 10-13 shots. She added 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Elivia Moore added 14 points on 6-10 shooting and joined freshman guard Ashton Barrett by nabbing 4 steals. Katie Jo Moore finished with 10 points, and tied freshman forward Kaison Ward for the rebounding lead, each with 7. Ward also had 4 steals and 4 big blocks.

Junior guard Aziah Campbell and sophomore guard Abby Maggard both chipped in with 8 points each. They were joined by sophomore guard Kennedy Harvill with 3 assists apiece.

The Caney Club finished shooting 40.7% (35-86) from the field and 9.1% (1-11) from long range. They connected on 50% (11-22) from the foul line while adding 47 rebounds, 16 assists, 7 blocks and 21 steals.

Karilyn Wieting paced WC (0-1) with 21 points. Her squad finished shooting 36.7% (22-60) from the field, 34.8% (8-23) from behind the arc, and 74.4% (29-39) from the charity stripe. They also added 52 rebounds, 13 assists, 3 blocks and 9 steals.

The Lady Eagles return home on November 6th to face the Ohio Christian Trailblazers. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
